The Whomping Willows (Blog) |
Notes from the road, thoughts on the creative process, and an occasional glimpse of Woonsocket from my living room. |
Hey dudes,
I’ve just begun a diet/exercise plan, and I plan to stick to it until I lose 90 lbs. I’m doing this mostly independently, but I’m using MyFitnessPal (free phone app and website) to help keep track of my daily nutritional intake and exercise. I’m also using this as a social networking tool so I can communicate with other folks trying to get in shape, so please feel free to add me if you’re a MFP user! http://myfitnesspal.com/bigwhompy
Anyway, I have three major obstacles right now: 1) I’m lazy when I’m home from tour; 2) I LOVE buffalo chicken; 3) I LOVE fancy beer, and my favorite beers are typically about 300 to 400 calories per 12 ounce serving. Yikes.
Tonight, I accomplished something wonderful: I created a 400-calorie buffalo chicken sandwich. Here’s how to make it:
1. Go to the store and buy yourself some organic, cage-free chicken breast. If you have access to a local farm, buy it there. Don’t buy the regular stuff because it’s filled with nasty shit that doesn’t naturally appear in chicken. The organic, cafe-free stuff might be a little more expensive, but you can find deals and you will notice that the ethically produced meat tastes a shit-ton better than the regular crap. Just do it.
2. Cook a 4-ounce portion of chicken breast in a bit of olive oil on medium heat in your favorite frying pan.
3. After a couple minutes, drizzle a teaspoon or so of Frank’s Hot Buffalo sauce (or a homemade buffalo sauce if you’re cooler than me) over the chicken breast.
4. Continue cooking the chicken, and flip it a couple times until both sides are nicely browned and it’s cooked through.
5. Meanwhile, toast a whole wheat bun.
6. When the chicken’s done and the bun’s toasted, place the chicken on the bottom part of the bun. Sprinkle the chicken with about a tablespoon of gorgonzola crumbles. Place a slice of tomato and some red onion on the chicken.
7. Eat the sandwich.
The actual calorie total for my sandwich was 412, but I used a fairly hearty bun (it accounted for 220 of the 412 calories). You can probably cut this down to about 320 calories by using a different bun.
Love,
Matt
